The oldest hotel in the world has been operating for 1300 years.

 

To the east of Houshi, near the Sea of Japan, lies Mount Hakusan, recognized since ancient times as one of the Three Sacred Mountains of Japan. It is there that the oldest hotel and first hot spring spa in the world was established.

Legend has it that Awazu Onsen was founded by the great monk Taicho Daishi. One day, he climbed Mount Hakusan and, as the journey was difficult and he was of old age, he decided to rest. In his dream, the god of the mountain appeared to him and said that he had a gift for the people. In the nearby village of Awazu, there are underground hot springs that heal and rejuvenate, but one must reach them. Daishi decided to test the prophetic dream and found the healing springs. This gave rise to the world's first spa, managed by the monk's disciple - Garyo Hoshi. According to history, the holy water was said to have healing properties, soothing wounds and curing human diseases and weaknesses.

A family business for 46 generations.

Family-owned Hotel Houshi, run for 46 generations, had a humble beginning as a sanatorium, but the first generation owner Zengoro believed that Houshi should become a true inn with hot springs to soothe both the body and mind. The legend has been passed down from generation to generation, starting from the first encounter with the hot spring 1300 years ago and continuing until today, just like Hotel Houshi. Since the beginning of the first hotels, both their function and significance have changed significantly. Inns along the roads welcomed travelers and traders traveling the routes, and staying in them was mainly associated with warm food, safe accommodation, and watering horses.
